I wanted to play with the idea of working from physical family photography for this painting. How I’m framing and composing this work relates to how I built my canvas stretcher, from the lack of supports and beveling at the back, you can see the frame. So the white polaroid-esque elements came very naturally to this work. With the immediacy and looseness of my paint handling, I wanted to reflect the hazyness of memory. Although this work is not from my personal experience, It is a part of who I am. We tend to take on our parent's values and identity, creating our own experience through them. I want to expand on this piece, developing a series reflecting my parent's life before me and researching more family photos to inspire future works.
